TPMS

Post by Ken »

-That's tyre pressure monitoring system.
I have a cheap TPMS on my bike. Around $60.
A valve cap on each wheel with a sender in it, and a small LCD display with handlebar mount, which shows pressure and temperature for each wheel.
The temperature figures aren't very accurate (don't match), but the pressure readings are close.
It includes upper and lower pressure alarms which can be (crudely) adjusted.
The LCD unit is rechargeable from a USB charger. The tyre caps have replaceable button batteries. They only transmit when moving.

What it does for me is reassure me when riding that I don't have a tyre going down.
It also indicates just how much pressure goes up with riding. 7psi on a hot day!

I'm on my second set. The first one had water get into the LCD, and after I pulled it apart to dry out, reassembly wasn't too successful.

What caused me to post this, was mention on the Triumph Tiger forum of someone's rear pressure cap falling to bits and deflating the back tyre while riding. (Fortunately a Tiger is well behaved with a flat back tyre.)
So it's a risk. But I'm sticking with my unit. (They can also be bought with 4 sender caps, for cars.)
